Fashion Trends Defining 2022

Here's my top picks for 2022's biggest trends in fashion.

1. Loungewear
Thanks to a new surge in COVID-19 cases worldwide (hello Omicron), the loungewear trend that dominated 2020 and 2021 alike doesn't seem to be going anywhere anytime soon. As Refinery29 predict in their article, which you can read here, 'Sweats 2.0' will be a 2022 staple. Australian fashion brands that are typically home to premium ready-to-wear collections have even launched loungewear and athleisure lines to capitalise on the trend. Like Aje's Aje Athletica collection, or SIR The Label Sweats.
2. Oversized shirting
Continuing with the line of comfort-first dressing, like the loungewear trend, oversized shirting is sure to have a place in 2022. Since mid 2021, my Instagram feed has been filled with images of oversized shirting and it shows no signs of slowing down. Brands like BLANCA are known for their signature oversized shirting silhouettes and more are seemingly popping up everyday. From thrifting oversized dress shirts from the mens section, to buying intended oversized designs from high-end brands, this seems like a trend everyone can get on board.

3. Purple
As Pantone announced it's Color of the Year 2022 to be Very Peri, it's no wonder purple is expected to take center stage in 2022. It comes as no surprise that the rise in the digital world influenced this colour choice by Pantone, as Laurie Pressman, vice president of Pantone Color Institute, explained in an interview with Vogue “There is just no question that gaming influenced the continued usage of Very Peri, and we really want the Color of the Year to be reflective of what is happening in the world around us.” As someone who is known for my neutral colour palette style, I've noticed that purple has even managed to slowly make it's way into my own wardrobe. Have I been influenced?

4. Cutouts
Last on my list of trends to watch in 2022 is cutouts. Although this is not a trend I see myself jumping on board just yet (I need a little more convincing), it will be sure to have a place in 2022. From Bec + Bridge's signature cut out dresses, like this one, to cut out blazers, like this one from Zara, this trend is well and truly here!

I'd love to hear your thoughts on what trends you think we'll see in 2022, and which ones you hope might stay in 2021 - Add your comment below!
Until next time,
- Sarah
