With so much (!!) available to us as consumers these days, it's hard to know what to ignore and what to allow to take up our time. From viral moments in pop culture, breaking news stories, must-try trends, popular new TV series' taking over the internet, major political/cultural events shaking up the world, we're overwhelmed with information and things to keep up with. If we're not watching The White Lotus or Euphoria at the same time as the rest of the internet we're missing out, right? Wrong (I mean, we will miss out on understanding some of the memes). One thing that 2022 taught me is to take time to read/watch/listen/consume things that actually peaks our interest and that we get joy out of - not just because its trending.

Here's just a few of the noteworthy things I enjoyed throughout 2022, from podcasts, articles, shows and radio listens. Let me know yours in the comments below!

Liz Sunshine's 'Exploring our relationship with clothes' Project

Liz is a fashion photographer and owner of Street Smith Agency which is currently undertaking a project to explore people's relationships with clothes. Liz often documents her observations and thoughts on the topic on her Instagram page, posting thought provoking questions to her audience, sharing notes she's made throughout the project as well as posting 'what people are wearing' videos. A particular concept I've enjoyed are Liz's 'Reading Peoples Clothes' field notes she shares (examples here).

You can check out Street Smith Agencys project page, where you can participate in their most recent project Q&As, or follow Liz on Instagram for an insight.

Dirt: The flat era of fashion by Ana Kinsella (Article)

This article deep dives into what Ana calls "the flat era of fashion" - a result of Instagram taking over and changing the way people view fashion. She writes about how personal style seems to be fading and people are dressing to be photographed and to be on-trend.

The Daily Aus (News & Media)

If you're like me and enjoy keeping up to date with news, but hate the mainstream repetition and (more often than not) bias, then The Daily Aus is for you. TDA is a news and media outlet run by young Aussies who make keeping up to date with Australian and global news simple. The year that was 2022 had its fair share of bad news stories, which could become overwhelming at times, however, TDA made it somewhat easy to keep up with. They post non-bias factual news reports in easy to read Instagram posts without the typical BS that can often come with mainstream media. If you're not on Instagram, or just prefer receiving your news elsewhere, you can also check out their website.

Gucci Twinsburg (Fashion Show)

The Spring Summer 2023 Paris Fashion Week had many noteworthy moments, like the Coperni show that ended in the viral spray on dress moment, Loewe's anthurium flower themed show or Balenciaga's show that had models stomping through mud. That said, the biggest 'wow' moment for me was Gucci's Twinsburg show which saw 68 - yes, 68 - sets of twins walk down the runway in duplicate looks. The first half of the show you see singular models walking, like any regular show when suddenly a wall lifts revealing the other half of the room and with it, what appears to be a mirror image. It's at this point you realise what is meant by Gucci Twinsburg. This show had me so captivated I could watch it over and over.

NTS Radio (Music)

After months of persistence, my partner finally got me into listening to NTS Radio, a global radio platform that broadcasts from over 50 countries with live shows 24/7. There are endless options, from listening live, to infinite mixtapes in different genres, you'll never be lost for music. My favourite shows are The NTS Breakfast Show w/ Flo (every Monday - Wednesday) and the One Glove Breakfast Show w/ Macca (weekly on Saturdays). Although I don't often listen live (these shows are streamed on London time), I wake up looking forward to playing the episode uploads and am completely lost on the days these shows aren't on! Flo and Macca if you're reading this - please come back from Christmas break now.

Before the Coffee Gets Cold (Book)

One of my favourite reads in 2022 is this short but sweet book by Toshikazu Kawaguchi. The synopsis reads:

"In a small back alley in Tokyo, there is a café which has been serving carefully brewed coffee for more than one hundred years. But this coffee shop offers its customers a unique experience: the chance to travel back in time."

I wouldn't call myself a huge reader, but given this book had me captivated so much that I finished it in about 2 days, I think it's safe to say I enjoyed it!

Shameless (Podcast)

If you haven't heard of it already, Shameless is a podcast covering all things pop culture. They describe themselves as "the podcast for smart people who love dumb stuff" and that's exactly why I love it. Zara and Michelle, the podcast hosts, do a brilliant job of covering top pop culture stories without it feeling silly and gossipy. They offer their opinions on in a way that isn't obnoxious and discuss stories more deeply than just surface level. Each weekly show also begins with recommendations from Zara and Michelle of what they've enjoyed the previous week, which is a bonus.

Mad Men (TV Series)

Not a new series (it started in 2007), but new to me. Mad Men is a tv drama set in the 1960s centered around the lives of those who work in one of New York's most notable advertising agencies. I can't exactly pinpoint what it is I liked so much about this show, but it will be one of my favourites for a long time. You can watch it here in Australia on Stan.

There you have it! A few things I enjoyed consuming in 2022. And yes, I did give in and watch Euphoria. Not my absolute all time favourite, but still worth watching if you haven't.

Let me know what you enjoyed in 2022 in the comments below! Is The White Lotus actually worth the hype, or does it just have a funky theme song?

Until next time,

- Sarah
